Vedic meditation for sleep
If you lie awake with a busy mind, Vedic meditation can help. Twenty minutes, twice a day, gives your body a very deep rest and helps your nervous system settle out of “fight-or-flight” mode. Many people find they fall asleep more easily and wake feeling more refreshed.
My own story
For decades, I struggled with insomnia. Running a fashion label at a fast pace and being diagnosed with PTSD meant I was dealing with a huge amount of stress, and nothing I tried could improve my sleep. Through meditation, I discovered a technique so simple and easy, which was exactly what I needed, because I was already exhausted from trying so hard. Gradually, over time, it improved my sleep dramatically. It’s why I’m so passionate about helping others sleep well.
Why deep rest by day helps you sleep at night
When stress builds up, the body stays on alert, and it becomes hard to switch off at night. Vedic meditation gives the body a deep state of rest while the mind settles beyond active thought. Practised regularly, it helps release accumulated stress and fatigue and can lower stress hormones such as cortisol, so it becomes easier to let go when your head hits the pillow.
There is nothing to focus on and nothing to control. If your mind won’t stop thinking, that’s fine. You simply return to your personal mantra effortlessly, and the mind settles in its own time.
What students notice
A recent student told me that after a month of meditating, they no longer needed their sleeping pills. Another, Peter, wrote that he now starts his day “calm, clear-minded and intentional” and enjoys better sleep and more creativity.
Everyone is different. If you take medication for sleep, please talk to your doctor before making any changes.
When to meditate
You practise twice a day: once in the morning and again in the late afternoon or early evening. Rather than meditating at bedtime, the practice lowers the stress that builds up through the day, so you arrive at night more settled.
